A Study on Optimization of Photoneutron Shielding in a Medical Accelerator Room by Using Monte Carlo Simulation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Medical linear accelerators operating above 10 MV require door shielding for neutrons in addition to photons. A criterion for choice of optimal configuration of lamination of BPE (Borated Polyethylene) and lead is not clear. Moreover, optimal configuration cannot be determined by the conventional method using an analytical formula and simple measurement. This study performs Monte Carlo simulation of radiation field in a commercial LINAC room with 15 MV X-ray sources. Considering two configuration of lamination such as ‘lead-BPE’ and ‘lead-BPE-lead’, dose equivalents are calculated by using the MCNPX code and comparative analyses are performed with each other. The obtained results show that there is no significant difference in neuron shielding between both configurations, whereas lead-BPE-lead is more effective for photon shielding. It is also noted that the absolute values of neutron doses are much greater than that of photon doses outside as well as inside the door, by three orders of magnitude. As a conclusion, the laminating of lead-BPE is suggested as the optimal configuration from the viewpoint of simplicity in fabrication and handling, even though it has no significant difference from lead-BPE-lead in terms of total dose equivalent.

Background: High-energy linear accelerator (linac) is a valuable tool and the most commonly device for external beam radiation treatments in cancer patients. In the linac head, high-energy photons with energies above the threshold of interaction produce photoneutrons. These photoneutrons deliver the extra dose to the patients in the planning treatment and increase the risk of secondary cancer.O...
متن کاملThe influence of neutron contamination on pacemaker in photon beam radiotherapy by LINAC using the Monte Carlo method
Introduction: In radiation therapy with high-energy photon beams (E > 7 MeV) neutrons are generated mainly in LINACs head thorough (γ, n) interactions. These neutrons affect the shielding requirements in radiation therapy rooms. According to the protocol TG-34, photon absorbed dose of 10Gy can cause permanent damage to the pacemaker and the dose of 2Gy can make minor changes in...
